Adaptation of a British kitten

Congratulations! You became the happy owner of a thoroughbred kitten, you have chosen and brought home the only, best, YOUR BRITISH KITTEN. You spent many hours studying the breed, choosing a responsible breeder. And now your meeting has taken place

But here is an unpleasant surprise. A little kitten in a new house is crying!

It would seem that you all foresaw, took the baby no earlier than three months, he has good genetics, the kitten’s parents are healthy and he himself has been vaccinated. So what is the reason?

In some cases, moving can scare the baby very much – all these smells and noises. He can really yearn for littermates, friends in games. Be patient with him, caress and try to calm him down immediately upon arrival. However, do not be too persistent, let him get comfortable first.

Now the kitten has a new family, the best parents and a wonderful hospitable house.

So, you need to do everything so that the kitten realizes this faster and becomes happy in its new life.

The first rule of adaptation: we limit the space of the kitten.

Let it be one room where you need to remove all dangerous items for the baby, close access to hard-to-reach places from which the kitten will not be able to crawl out on its own (for example, under the sofa), provide the kitten with a place for the toilet, space for bowls, put a scratching post, put toys . Even if in the future you plan that the kitten will do toilet things in another place, say the toilet-bathroom, it’s not scary. After the first stress from the move has passed (it is literally a few days), the kitten will easily rebuild. You just do not need to teach your baby everything at once.

In addition, if you, having brought the baby to the house, immediately provide him with the opportunity to run freely around the apartment, he may simply get lost in the new space and not find the way to his tray.

A kitten can completely hide from fear, for example, behind a sofa … it’s okay, this is a normal reaction. Do not immediately try to get it out of there. Leave it for a while, let it catch your breath … After a few hours you can try to play with it with a fishing rod … Curiosity can overcome fear. Just do not do anything by force. Otherwise, he will be even more afraid.

And, only when you are sure that the kitten is not afraid of anything and nobody, you can give him the opportunity to slowly develop other premises. And then, also gradually, you can put the tray in another place, the one that you chose for it.

Second rule: For some time, isolate the kitten from too active children and other animals. Do not let small children with loud screams chase a kitten. Explain to them that this is also a baby who is now scared, talk and teach him how to deal with him. Usually, the British communicate well with children and willingly take part in games, but everything has its time. Communication of the child with the kitten must be mandatory in the presence of an adult and under his constant supervision.

In the first days, try so that no one bothers the baby, the path itself will slowly leave the carrier, go around the territory, sniff everything .. maybe this will happen at night, when everyone will sleep and the baby will calm down a bit. Show love and patience to him, and adaptation will occur naturally.

The third rule: do not introduce new food into the kitten’s diet the first time you are in a new house. Moving is already enough stress for him. Do not aggravate this condition with new food, follow the recommendations of the breeder, do not change the feed sharply and at your own discretion, at least in the first 2 weeks. Do not forget that fresh water should be constantly available to the kitten!

The first 2-3 days in the new house the kitten may not eat, this is normal, do not worry about this.

Too many living things cannot eat in stress. Although there are some exceptions to the rules)

Cat mom teaches kittens to use the tray, so by the time you move, your kitten will already be accustomed to the toilet. Please note, however, that in the new house, the kitten may not determine the place on its own. Take a look at your house through the eyes of a kitten, especially if there are many rooms and floors. A small creature can simply get lost in the labyrinth of all these rooms, stairs and doors. This is one of the reasons to initially keep a kitten in a small space. The need for this will soon disappear, as he will explore the house with his new friend – with you. If you have several floors, put a tray on each of them.

Kittens are like children, they need love and attention. The main thing is to do everything calmly, without screaming and irritation. Be careful – kittens are curious, restless, examine everything around, all objects that they can climb into, for them, under them and on them. They chew plants, electrical wiring, ropes and brushes, and Christmas tree tinsel.

You can not scream at the kitten, scare him and even more so beat him. Animals do not understand human words, and no matter how much you say to your pet that you can’t bite it and you can’t go in there, he will never understand you, and if he is reprimanded even with elevated tones, he will be scared.

Therefore, remove all dangerous objects and plants in advance !!! Provide the kitten with toys. Any toy that does not have small parts that can be torn and swallowed is suitable.

During joint games, do not turn the kitten on its back and do not grab it by the tummy: it excites him and provokes biting. Do not let him play with your fingers or your hand: he must learn that you can’t bite your fingers. Man’s hands just to stroke the kitten and feed. For the game there are mahallas, ropes with a piece of paper at the end, a little ray from the lazar pointer, or other interactive games. In general, do not encourage any rudeness and aggression in the game: it can be nice with a kitten, but later it will turn into a problem with an adult cat.
